Kilo-Cents Counter

When you compare prices per kilogram you will find highly processed, packaged and advertised foods more expensive and less healthy than lesser processed, more healthy foods.

You can compare products to identify good nutritional value for money. Check the price per kilogram of the food you buy and decide if it is good value for money compared to healthier alternatives.

Even though you may not be a kilo of a food in a single shop, you will over the course of the year. This is where the savings really add up.

The Kilo-Cents Counter is a tool to help you calculate the cost per kilogram of foods.

To use the Kilo-cents counter:

Step 1: Round off the price to the nearest 50 cents
Step 2: Round off the weight to the nearest 50 grams
Step 3: Look across the columns to find the price of the item and then down the rows to find the weight of the item.

Where the two lines meet, is the price per kilo.

Calculate the exact cost per kilo...

You may prefer to calculate the exact cost per kilo using a calculator - there may be one on your mobile phone. This could be more discrete in the supermarket than using the kilo-cents counter.

1. Divide the cost (in dollars) by it's weight (in grams)
2. Multiply that number by 1000.

Eg: Packet of potato crisps costs $2.00 and weighs 50grams
2.00 ÷ 50 = 0.04
0.04 x 1000= 40
So, the packet of potato crisps costs $40 per kilo

These cost per kilo cards can printed and cut out to take with you shopping. To print them as wallet cards, you will need to print the first page, then print the second page on the back.
