Homebrand vs Name Brands: How much could you save buying generic?

The choice of packaged foods in Australian supermarkets is huge, yet many people stick to the same expensive brands. Buying generic or homebrand doesn't always mean an inferior product.

There are many factors which determine the price of a food product. You can't tell quality just by the price. In fact, the price of foods can be another marketing technique to increase sales. Too expensive and we can't afford them, too cheap and we think they are of poor quality.

Generic or homebrand products are cheaper than other name brands. This may be because they save money by using simplier packaging, they aren't advertised, they don't pay for premium shelf space or because they don't inflate prices to meet consumer expectations.

Many people report not liking homebrand products because of the taste. However, most staple foods with very few ingredients are the same product as there is no recipe or variables.

Take these single ingredient foods for example:

Name Name Brand Home Brand
Rolled Oats 900g $6.82 $3.24
Tea Bags (50) $2.80 $2.16
Eggs (12) $6.64 $3.30
Plain Flour (1kg) $2.70 $0.95
White Sugar (1kg) $2.30 $1.95
TOTAL  $21.26  $11.60
Total Savings  $9.66

You could save almost $10 every time you shop, just by chosing homebrand staples.

For other products, homebrand varieties can be just as good as the name brands and they often come out healthier.
